Instra:Mental

London-based production duo Al Bleek and Kid Drama—better know to UK bass freaks as Instra:mental came out with the tune "Watching You", last year which features the sugary vocals of fellow reformer D Bridge.

Its like nothing else that came out in all of 2009. Sure, it clocks in at 170 BPM, but to place it in the same bracket as generic tearout fare would be to do it a very great injustice. Essentially, it's drum & bass reimagined as pop, with a bouncy R&B flex and big, bright arcade game melodies providing sparkling ambience. Imagine Deep Cuts-era Knife given a healthy dose of the Intalex treatment, with added shades of Chicago house, and you'll be about there. It's ace.

Ben Klock

The Berghain is the downstairs part of Berghain/Panoramabar complex, the Berlin club for the clubber who never sleeps. While the Panoramabar upstairs plays host to a softer spectrum of techno and house, the Berghain caters to the fiends of the city: the kind of clubbers who stay locked into the groove until the lights come on, which in Berlin is more likely to be Sunday evening than Sunday morning.

It's a job perfect for Klock, who cut his teeth spinning the hard stuff at venues such as Cookies, Tresor and WMF in the nineties. These days he continues to satiate those with a thirst for pumping fist techno, but he’s also prone to breaking up the loops with older house, techno and minimal. "I like to combine old tracks - whether it be Chicago, Detroit or European dance music - with new ones," says Klock.

As a producer, Klock also has an ear for afterhours dancefloors. He's shown a flair for a darker, more hypnotic blend of techno with 12"s on Bpitch Control and Berghain’s in-house stable Ostgut Ton: 'Dawning/Dead Man Watches the Clock' was even a hit with DJs such as Michael Mayer and James Holden. Since then, Klock has notched up another release on Ostgut, 'Czeslawa', as well as several cuts on his own label Klockworks, all of which straddle the line between more workmanlike techno and minimal.

This is a remix of his track Subzero by Function Regis (aka Sandwell District) that I'm into right now.

Moodymann

An outspoken voice in the normally non-confrontational world of electronic dance music, Moodymann (Kenny Dixon Jr.) is committed to keeping a distinctly black imprint on techno and house.

Moodymann worked at several Detroit record stores in the mid-nineties including a store owned by producer Blake Baxter. During the mid-nineties Kenny was also the resident DJ at the Detroit based Outcast Motorcycle Club. At that time he was known as "House". After his first several releases on Planet E Records Kenny became quite popular in France and from there his popularity grew.

Moodymann sound is a hybrid form of techno/house dance music arrived at via innovative use of reworked riffs, samples and grooves. While he may frustrate people with his refusal to be interviewed and insistence on reminding people of the genre's origins, the soulfulness of his output is unquestioned. Utilizing classic soul and jazz samples, low-slung bass lines and an approach to drum programming that is diametrically opposed to the tendency to push the tempo faster and faster, he has achieved classic status thanks to gems like "Sunday Morning", "Shades of Jae", and his remix of Innerzone Orchestra's "People Make the World Go Round". Following years of 12" only releases, he compiled his best work on "Silentintroduction", one of the most celebrated albums of the late 90s.

This is a track of his that I'm really into right now. The aggresive bass line behind the jazz sampling gets me every time.

Soom T & Disrupt

Jahtari records make an inspired move, hooking up again with Glasgow's slickest female MC Soom T over a classic C64 driven riddim. Disrupt lifts the melody from a 1990 SID-file by Swedish chip-rocker Johan Danielsson from Warriors Of The Wasteland, and uses it as thefunk-squealing centrepiece to his Skweee style riddim. Soom T just sounds soooo good here, lending the track a bhangra-dancehall flavour in her unique style on the title track, or a more typical singjay style on the digi-stepper 'Survivor', before flipping up again for a fast chat style on 'Doobee Dee Doo', all produced by Disrupt. Recommended!

Thanks to minging beige jacket for this one.

Dub Kult

Dub KULT doesn’t serve up an arid musical mono-culture, but a rich mix. The diversity of his music is a reflection of his background. Half-Indian, half-English, part-time member of both the cool crowd and the geek gaggle, neither definitively house nor techno. The music he makes is for both the head and the body. Even tunes that seem made for those moments when you’re lost on the dance-floor always have some latent, brooding meaning, an intention? Like few DJs of his generation, dub KULT understands that at the centre of clubbing madness lies a still, reflective core.

And the name? Kult has it’s roots in the infamous club nights Dub ran with the Kult collective, since 1997. Dancefloors were wiggled and grooved upon from everywhere from the ICA to dodgy Dalston warehouses and swank West London clubs. Guests have included Nathan Coles, Tyler T-Bone Stadius, Richard Grey, Cylob, Evil Eddie Richards and Brit underground legend Tom Churchill.
